meetingsclub’s Mark is a social animal! He likes nothing better at work than meeting people and at weekends catching up with family and friends. But like us all, he has been forced to social distance himself. So not wanting to miss out Mark came up with a cunning plan! Using the Zoom app which he normally would be using for our clubnews interviews, he linked up with his good friends Steve and Janet for a couple of drinks and a virtual catch up. Here’s how he got on.
“Life has changed in the space of just a few days. And it’s clear looking at the terrible situation in Italy, that if as a nation we don’t listen to advice and take seriously Government directives about social distancing and self-isolation, we will face a terrible crisis.
Most weekends I’m out and about seeing friends. A trip to the pub, a meal in a local restaurant perhaps or around at somebody’s house for a catch up. That’s all gone and will be gone for the foreseeable future. So, what to do on a Saturday night? The answer, a Zoom video call – with a twist! I use Zoom every day at meetingsclub for talking to colleagues and recording interviews. It’s a great tool and one that we can now use with friends to have virtual get togethers.
Saturday evening and my wife and I got our drinks and nibbles ready, sat in front of the fire and launched Zoom. At the other end, our good friends Steve and Janet did the same. We’ve known each other for many years but have never done anything like this before. I poured the drinks at our end, opened the crisps and two hours flew by as we chatted. The quality of the connection was excellent, and we even shared screens to show holiday videos from yesteryear.
So next time we’re going to go one better and have a virtual dinner. The menu and drinks will be exactly the same and we might even get dressed up for the occasion. Strange times call for innovation as we all need our social fix. Cheers!”
