overview
As a country house in town it is unique in all London. The Societys headquarters is a fine Norman Shaw building in his eclectic Queen Anne style, with a gracious 1930s extension.
Overlooking Kensington Gardens, 1 Kensington Gore was originally built in the 1870s as a private house for the Lowther family. The Society bought the house in 1912 and an extension, including the recently refurbished and renamed Ondaatje Theatre, was added in 1930 to mark the Societys centenary.
The Societys facilities are hugely versatile. We can host events ranging from small meetings and conferences to intimate dinner parties, large dinner dances, receptions and weddings (the baronial Hall is licensed for civil marriages). We are also a popular location for filming.
The acoustically excellent panelled Ondaatje Theatre is versatile enough for a range of activities, from lectures and chamber opera to conferences and press launches. It can accommodate 450 for a conference or 750 for an evening lecture
