Derby Museums – The Silk Mill

The Silk Mill is reinventing itself for the 21st century and, through reviving the principles of the Enlightenment, expanding traditional perspectives of what a museum is and can be. We are developing the concept of STEAM in the UK – advancing STEM disciplines (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) to incorporate the element of Art, understanding that creativity is an intrinsic part of thinking, making and innovating.
The new museum will display fascinating items from Derby’s rich industrial history, celebrating the makers of the past; and will be designed to empower makers of the future through inspirational environments for learning programmes and activities. The project is timed to be completed in 2019/20 and is supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund, Derby City Council and Arts Council England.
Our project theme “Made by the Makers of Today” is a primary focus for the coming months and years.
