overview
Emmanuel College was founded in 1584 by Sir Walter Mildmay, Chancellor to Queen Elizabeth I, to train learned and devoted ministers of the Church of England. Built on the site of a former priory of the Dominican Order, also known as the Black Friars the College has extensive and tranquil gardens and a beautiful Chapel by Sir Christopher Wren. The first time visitor to Emmanuel College is struck by the immediate contrast between the busy streets of central Cambridge and the serene surroundings of the beautiful College buildings and gardens. From the splendour of Front Court and the magnificent Wren Chapel to the peace and tranquillity of the Paddock with its pond and famous Emmanuel ducks, the College is the perfect venue for a conference, a wedding or a splendid meal in historic surroundings.
