overview
Situated in the ancient Heart of the City, the area around Newcastle Cathedral and the Castle form the medieval core of Newcastle upon Tyne.
The Cathedral is the seat of the Bishop of Newcastle. As the “mother church” of the Diocese, we exist to support the Bishop’s mission, and teaching and pastoral ministry, across the diocese.
The Cathedral is mainly 14th Century, with a striking 15th Century Lantern Tower.
Medieval treasures include the ornate font cover, a stained glass roundel of the Virgin Mary and infant Jesus, and the magnificent Thornton Memorial Brass. There is a fine collection of 19th and 20th century stained glass windows.
Other features include a fine alabaster reredos, hand-carved misericords, the 17th Century Hall and Maddison Memorials, and the Collingwood Monument dedicated to Admiral Lord Collingwood.
